Dr. Thompson is a Professor of Molecular Hepatology in the Institute of Liver Studies at King’s College London. He currently serves as an Honorary Consultant in Pediatric Hepatology and the Clinical Lead for the Liver Molecular Genetics service at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

He is widely recognized for his contributions to advancing the understanding of genetic cholestasis, particularly PFIC, through identification of pathogenic variants of PFIC-related genes and their clinical consequences across both pediatric and adult patient populations. 

Dr. Thompson is highly involved in research that bridges molecular mechanisms with clinical interventions across genetic and metabolic liver diseases. This work is reflected in his authorship of more than 50 original articles and textbook chapters.

Dr. Thompson is a fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and has lent his expertise through his speaking engagements at various international conferences and through service as a scientific advisor for both industry and research advisory boards, including the PFIC Network and the Biliary Atresia Scientific Advisory Board.
